It really helps if you can spend time looking at different representations of birds at an inspiring place like the
Museum of Anthropology at UBC. The drawings you see here were created by museum visitors at our come-and-go workshop, "(F)Light of Birds," at MOA on Sunday, June 19, 2011*.
Once you feel inspired, you'll need: sheets of black card (these are 4 x 6"), white pencils, a couple of layers of corrugated cardboard to go under the card (to protect the surface you're working on) and some pushpins (we used crazy glue to attach them to the end of eraser-less pencils, to make it easier to hold them).
- Draw a simple line drawing of a bird on the black card, keeping the shape of the bird inside the edges of the card.
- Use a push pin to prick holes along the lines of your drawing.
- Once you're done, turn your card around (so you don't see the white drawing anymore) and hold it up to the light... beautiful!
Of course you can draw anything you like using this technique, what do you think would look good as a pinprick drawing?
Have fun!*Photos from this workshop can be found on the Vancouver Draw Down Flickr photostream.
